Ad Round Up – July 2022
Our wildest ad round up to date. Buckle up!!!
Lizz is back with an unhinged selection of her favourite music choices from ad-land last month.
TLDR: a reimagining of Flo Rida’s hit of the decade “Low”, rare beer temptation, Princess Nokia x pubic hair song, and the “best original composition for an advert of all time” feat. Paris Hilton down under.
Heeeeere we go….
Power – It’s Electrifying
Creative Agency: Schjærven
Production Company: Oslo Assembly
Director: Christophe Dolcerocca
I’m sure you’re familiar with the old adage “shawty had them apple bottom jeans, boots with the fur, got the whole club looking at… Norwegian electronics retailer ‘Power’!”
…well, that’s perhaps not quite how the original goes, but it’s been 15 years since Flo Rida had us hitting the floor so we’re spicing things up.
This re-imagining of ‘Low’ comes complete with mid-noughties T-Pain-style auto-tuned vocals and includes phrases such as “electrified okay, we can go all day”, “low price!” and “you can feel the power”. It is all brilliantly to the point – because at the end of the day ‘Power’ are an electronics retailer, selling products which require power at low prices.
Advertising… It really doesn’t have to be more complicated than that.
ASDA George – Uniform for the People
Creative Agency: Impero
Production Company: Armoury
Director: Amy Becker-Burnett
Following on from their successful 2021 back to school campaign ‘Arrive like you mean it’, Asda George have brought the playground squad back together to spit bars on a new beat for ‘Uniform for the people’ and it’s another slappa.
It’s hooky, it’s adorable, it’s budget-conscious, it’s… probably going to be stuck in my head all day.
The track cleverly promotes the supermarket’s durable and affordable school wear range whilst simultaneously addressing the growing cost of living crisis with lyrics like “Only spend what you should, you can still look good”, the Supermarket chain letting families know that they’ve got parents’ back, this back-to-school season.
It’s hooky, it’s adorable, it’s budget-conscious, it’s… probably going to be stuck in my head all day.
🗣️🗣️🗣️Uniform for the people, uniform for me!!!🗣️🗣️🗣️
Desperados – Pour some unusual on your usual
Creative Agency: We Are Pi
Production Company: Cape Town
Director: Freddie Powell
I have mentioned before in a past ad round-up that I don’t like beer. It’s sadly, simply not for me! BUT I always desperately wanted to like it. I wanted play with the big bois! So, I would occasionally, when I was feeling particularly masochistic, grimace my way through a bottle of desperados.
The desperado consumers in this ad, however, not a grimace in sight! Just the opposite, actually. They’re all having a great time drinking desperados… (pls tell me your secret). Or maybe it’s the mega fun house party they’re all in attendance of that’s causing such fervent joy.
Either way, this is a great spot with a brilliant utilisation of Edith Piaf’s classic ‘Non, je ne regrette rien’, which works fantastically to juxtapose the frantic the house party setting, giving the audience a bit of brain-breathing space as we lurch from one colourful set piece to the next.
Who knows, maybe I’ll crack open a desperados at some point in the near future. Although, much to the contrary of this ad, I probably will regret it.
Venus- It’s Time to Care (For Your Pubic Hair)
Creative Agency: Grey New York
Production Company: Strange Beast
Director: Sacha Beeley
IDC what any of y’all haters say, this slaps and I love Princess Nokia.
Uber Eats – Hot or Not
Creative Agency: Special Group
Production Company: Finch
Director: Alex Roberts
Halt the brief. Call off the search. Supervisors, in the words of Beyoncé – release your jobs! Our careers – moot. done. finished. Because nothing. NO 👏THING 👏will top this. Stop filling in your ‘best original composition’ submissions to the Arrows, the Clios, the Lions!! YOU ARE NOT WORTHY. Only this Uber Eats ad is worthy.
Obviously the best original composition for an advert of all time. I will be taking no further questions or comments at this time. Thank you.
Just Eat x Katy Perry you have been usurped!!! We have a new food delivery service celebrity brand ambassador taking the crown! The original influencer. The one. The only. Paris Hilton.
…and also the Irwin family but this is a Paris Hilton stan account.
Ok so I might be a little biased bc I cannot overstate the chokehold P-Hil had me in back in the early 00s. The juicy couture tracksuits. Tinkerbell the chihuahua. The Simple Life!!!!! (cue rousing chorus of ‘sa na saaaa’). I was OB-SESSED. Her New York Times bestseller ‘Confessions of an Heiress’ still displayed proudly on my bookshelf. Read cover to cover dozens of times. The pink glittery cover serves as a glorious reminder of simpler times…
And the track itself? Simply incredible. The electronic beat? Delightfully terrible. The question of whether sandals or double khaki are hot or not hot (spoiler: not hot)? Stunning. The cheap looking editing? So, so beautiful.
Obviously the best original composition for an advert of all time. I will be taking no further questions or comments at this time. Thank you.
