Football’s Coming Home Again
In a true move of both patriotism and marketing excellence, Atomic Kitten have released a new, Southgate-loving rendition of their song, twenty years after the original.
After waxing lyrical about Krept and Konan’s official England football anthem of the summer, we may need to revoke the hit-of-the-summer title, as noughties pop hit ‘Whole Again’ makes a dramatic return to the charts with rerecorded version titled ‘Southgate You’re The One – Football’s Coming Home Again’. Things you love to see.
Football fans have commandeered a whole host of pop songs for chants over the years, but the fan rendition of Atomic Kitten’s ‘Whole Again’, is currently taking the nation by storm for the 2020 EUROS.
Atomic Kitten saw an opportunity and ran with it. Much like Raheem Sterling.
You’d probably have to hide in a bunker to avoid hearing “Southgate you’re the one, You still turn me on, Football’s coming home again”, and in a true move of both patriotism and marketing excellence, Atomic Kitten have released a new, Southgate-loving rendition of their song, twenty years after the original.
Atomic Kitten members Natasha Hamilton and Liz McClarnon serenaded fans with their ode to the manager of England’s men’s football team at Box Park in Wembley, where England’s 4-0 defeat against Ukraine was screened. As if that wasn’t enough of a treat, third band member Jenny Frost reunited with McClarnon and Hamilton to release a studio version, just in time for the semifinal match, which saw England triumph over Denmark, 2-1. Despite having pulled it together fairly last minute, ‘Southgate You’re the One (Football’s Coming Home Again)’ is quite frankly a masterpiece: crowd chants, references to the beautiful game, early noughties pop nostalgia… what is not to love?
Ultimately, sometimes the simplest ideas are the most successful, and this collaboration with fans is a stunning example of repurposing.

Ultimately, sometimes the simplest ideas are the most successful, and this collaboration with fans is a stunning example of repurposing. Are Atomic Kitten the nation’s good luck charm? There is only one way to find out, and that is by watching the final of the 2020 EUROS this Sunday, when England will go head-to-head with Italy.
