Working with Havas, DLMDD created a new sonic logo for The Open University. A sound built to signal motion, possibility and progress. Always moving forward. Rippling with potential. A dialogue between neo-classical influence and electronic precision - clean, modern and quietly powerful. A sonic idea designed to open things up.
The sonic logo begins with movement. A ripple of sound that gathers energy, then lifts upward. It never quite lands. Instead, it keeps going. Airy textures and precise electronic detail create a feeling of space and direction. A signal that learning is already in motion.
Insight
The Open University exists to open doors. Flexible learning, accessible education and opportunity on your own terms. The sonic identity needed to reflect that ethos. Something credible and modern, but full of momentum. A sound that suggests capability, curiosity and forward motion. Not nostalgic. Not genre-led. Just a clear signal of possibility.
Approach
The composition blends restrained neo-classical harmony with modern sound design, influenced by laptop and computer sounds, to reflect the OU’s commitment to learning wherever, however and whenever you like.
Micro-rhythms and rippling motifs create motion. Gentle rises build confidence without drama. Warm tonal foundations keep the sound grounded and credible. The result is a sonic logo that feels active, open and full of potential. A sound always about to go somewhere.
